The flamenco was just incredible, captivating, passionate and totally engrossing….it was at a little club at the back of a restaurant so an amazing atmosphere. Afterwards we dined at Restaurant Botin which has been operating since 1725. We were privileged to receive a tour of the “house” and were led through packed diners to the cellar full of incredibly dusty wine, 3 floors of restaurant which was packed to the brim of Spaniards. It was my first 11pm dinner reservation so I feel very spanish now. They still have ‘siesta” where businesses close for lunch anywhere between 1:30pm and 4pm. We farewelled Jaime our tour leader and agreed to meet for one last breakfast of chocolate churros in the morning.

Segovia to Madrid, Spain…

After our dinner of roast suckling pig we left early the next morning by bus and train to Madrid, the Spanish capital. Using the metro we checked into our hotel in a suburb of Madrid called Legazpi. I’am totally sick of the backpack…so may have to explore another option…hmmm, you certainly learn a lot from travelling!!! We had our “orientation” and walked the main part of the city, Sol, and Mayoral square. We lunched at a typical tapas style bar and then explored the shopping area. Hopefully baggage issue finally sorted!?! Rather proudly caught the metro back by myself and did washing at the local laundromat…found some fruit to eat and getting ready for Flamenco club performance tonight and dinner at Spains oldest restaurant at 11pm. I will be asleep. Madrid is not exceptionally appealing to me so far. Large city, grimy and lacking trees and green. Organised “cartels” of beggars in the central area and constant warnings of pickpockets. Jaime was certain 2 guys were going to unzip my backpack on the train and grabbed my back! We were follwed by another shady character and relentlessly harrassed by a young beggar girl when at the ATM. There is a noticeable police presence though! Will explore more tomorrow. This is the last night of the Intrepid Paris to Madrid section of the tour and everyone is going separate ways. I stay with Jaime the leader and continue through Spain, into Portugal, then Morrocco with a new group of 11 other travellers. Should be interesting!

A gorgeous city of churches, spanish style architecture, ceramics and a castle. Staying at Hostal Jaime near the ancient Roman Aqueduct which is a magnificent engineering feat.

San Sebastian to Segovia…

Spent a glorious, sunny, blue sky day in San Sebastian walking the promenade to take the Funicular up the mountain. Spectacular view! More pintos before a city bus and 5 hour train trip to Segovia in central Spain. The topography was quite amazing as we left the coastal mountains and coniferous vegetation to pass through wide valleys and rolling hills. The country is drier and every inch used for cereal crops, mainly wheat as far as I can tell. The Spanish infrastructure is excellent..trains, great looking roads, power lines, loads of wind turbines, solar farms and industrial estates. It doesn’t appear that the economy is hurting in this regard!. However, the people in the towns, even in rural areas, live in apartment blocks which don’t look that fab. Its all so”spanish” though. Villages with stone churches with bells atop…just like in the old western movies! We arrived at about 10pm in the dark and bussed to our ‘Hostal’ in the older section of the city. Quick spanish hamburgers and the local soft drink before collapsing into bed.

Luchon to San Sebastian..

Travelled by private transfer to San Sebastian in the Basque, Spain. The border crossing soon became quite evident with different architectural styles. Checked into our pensione which is ok but we all agree a bit gloomy or something! We had an orientation tour of the city which has a lovely sandy bay and is located on the Atlantic ocean. We climbed Monte Urgull Mendina which has a large statue of Jesus presiding over the whole of San Seabastian. There is an interesting old quarter full of shops and bars which serve the Basque specialty “Pintxos” which means snacks served at the bar. We lunched on these and had two different lots at two different bars before final drinks at the Havana Bar. My i-photo is not working on my mac book air so no photos which is really annoying. Looks like technical assistance will have to be sought at the Apple store in Madrid. So, no pics I guess until. Hope its not major!!! Murphy’s Law!
Bordeaux to Luchon….

Leaving bordeaux we travelled by train for 3 hours towards the french Pyrenees, followed by another train and bus. The second train was the venue for another picnic lunch thrown together quite remarkably and managing to be really gourmet actually! The topography changed from flat gravel plains into rolling green hills and rushing rivers backed by the snow capped mountain range called the Pyrenees whcih divides France from Spain

. Luchon is a village at the base of the Pyreees or ‘French Alps” nestled in a valley with spectacular alpine scenery. The weather has changed dramatically and the 2 days were sunny with blue skies and balmy spring air. The air is clear and trees are budding, streams gushing with snow melt and flowers adding colour and vibrancy. The main street is lined with shops and restaurants and has a spectacular backdrop of snow clad peaks. We had a beautiful morning walk through the valley to a waterfall and then went to soak on the thermal pool. The complex had a vaporarium which was very unique in that it was in a large, steaming cave with pathways and seats to sit on and soak up the heat. I followed my experience with a hyrdomassage bath in which I couldn’t stop laughing as the place was so old fashioned and clinical… it was really nice though. We dined out both nights and celebrated our last night in France with a flute (plastic) of Moet of course. We are all dying for salad and vegetables as the french food is all rich. The markets are full of lovely fresh produce but is hasn’t appeared on the menus during the whole week we have been here…lettuce, a tiny slice of tomato, maybe green beans and potato done a hundred ways. We have taken to the “supermarche” to get salad and fruit as best we can.

The Intrepid travellers went on a bus tour from the city of Bordeaux to the sauterne wine growing area visiting the family owned and operated sauterne Chateau Gravas. It was sweet and superb and the grapes are all handpicked to ensure the correct stage of Noble Rot or Botrytis is present. The countryside was beautiful and full of vines and chateau and villages. The second winery was owned and operated by a school of engineers and was absolutely state of the art wine production for red and white wine. We spent the evening with more mojitos including a “pink” one and a truly delicious steak in a happening place in the city.

Bordeaux is a city on flat land with a large river called “la garonne” which has been used as a river port. It is not what I imagined! It is however very well laid out and clean and has a great , modern tram system. We caught one into the main, older part of the city and the shops and buildings were lovely. Got myself a backpack….finally conceded that my bag was too cumbersome for intrepid style travelling. However, everyone is so fond of the old elephant that Phil and Gina have adopted it to carry their shopping home in!! All tired and dying for fresh salad or vegetables but ended up in a funky bar for Mojito’s which were the best followed by a seafood dinner which was very adventurous. I stuck to the Sole but Kisane and Louise shared fish soup. langoustine, brown shrimp, whelks and other shellfish. Bordeaux red to accompany the meal of course…our french language skills are improving especially when deciphering menus.
