Sauternes and steaks…

The Intrepid travellers went on a bus tour from the city of Bordeaux to the sauterne wine growing area visiting the family owned and operated sauterne Chateau Gravas. It was sweet and superb and the grapes are all handpicked to ensure the correct stage of Noble Rot or Botrytis is present. The countryside was beautiful and full of vines and chateau and villages. The second winery was owned and operated by a school of engineers and was absolutely state of the art wine production for red and white wine. We spent the evening with more mojitos including a “pink” one and a truly delicious steak in a happening place in the city.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Bordeaux…

Bordeaux is a city on flat land with a large river called “la garonne” which has been used as a river port. It is not what I imagined! It is however very well laid out and clean and has a great , modern tram system. We caught one into the main, older part of the city and the shops and buildings were lovely. Got myself a backpack….finally conceded that my bag was too cumbersome for intrepid style travelling. However, everyone is so fond of the old elephant that Phil and Gina have adopted it to carry their shopping home in!! All tired and dying for fresh salad or vegetables but ended up in a funky bar for Mojito’s which were the best followed by a seafood dinner which was very adventurous. I stuck to the Sole but Kisane and Louise shared fish soup. langoustine, brown shrimp, whelks and other shellfish. Bordeaux red to accompany the meal of course…our french language skills are improving especially when deciphering menus.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Sarlat to Bordeaux….

Two buses and a train through the very pretty Dordogne river valley with magnificent chateau and villages, blossoming trees and greenery. Arrived at a tiny station with and hour and a half until the train came…no cafe so we improvised, raided Louise’s stores of gourmet products and scrounged up some fresh bread and red wind for 3 euros from the service station across the road. Set up our picnic in the waiting room and enjoyed our bottles of “Chateaux des Servo” as Kisane aptly named it. ImageImageImageImageImage

Sarlat…

Had a lovely day in Sarlat. Fresh food market, “laundry party”, cocktails at the local bar followed by dinner at a very atmospheric restaurant with a cave to explore. Tried Escargot in a ‘cassoulet’ rather than in the shell and it was actually delicious.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Tours to Sarlat….

Caught a train from Tours for an hour and a half and changed trains journeying through the french countryside for 3 hours to Aurrilac. We disembarked and, to quote our leader Jaime, “make a picnic “at the entrance to the station with goodies we bought together at a supermarket…baguettes, ham, pate, salad, cheese, fruit. Then we caught another train to a little village and had to wait for a bus to bring us to the gorgeous Sarlat. We opened a bottle of red wine on the platform…a unique experience! Sarlat is really lovely and very old…very french and a gourmets delight as it specialises in regional produce of Duck and Foie Gras. We wandered through the old quarter full of traditional buildings, stone streets and lovely shops full of Foie Gras, truffle oils, red wine and duck. We dined at a very nice French restaurant on Foie gras, duck breast with truffle perfume, goats cheese, Dordogne valley red wine and the local dessert speciality all for $30…ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Cycling the Loire Valley…

This was the day I wasn’t really excited about…but I managed to cycle 40km return trip through the Loire valley, following the river at times, from Tours to Chateau Villandry. It was magnificent..and so was the Chateau. Through rain, wind, sunshine then hail my little legs worked hard and although it was challenging I’m really glad I did it and made it!! The group is going well although Louise opted for a bus tour instead of the cycle. We lunched together at Villandry and tonight we have a bottle of French red wine to share before Jaime takes us to a good local restaurant for dinner.ImageImageImageIMG_0155IMG_3230

Start of Intrepid tour…

Met the group..Phil and Gina from Sydney on their Honeymoon, Kisane from Byron Bay, Louise from Sydney and the leader Jaime from Spain. We had a good dinner at a local french restaurant after our meeting and everyone is getting along well. Our train to Tours was rescheduled so we didn’t depart Paris until 5:30pm on the Sunday so more time exploring Paris. Of course my luggage is the largest and heaviest…this proved very interesting on the Paris Metro and then the train itself so I’m posting stuff back to Roseannes and the homeless people will do well from the older clothes I’m discarding! You live and learn I guess. Anyway, train trip good and we checked into the nice old style Hotel Europe in Tours. We went for a stroll to the Cathedral which was impressive and the streets and square of the old quarter where we dined on French food together. Not much English here so deciphering the menu was tricky…Filet Mignon in france is pork fillet…confusing!? Didn’t get to bed until 11:45 ..late for old Vic! ImageImageImageImage

Paris moments…

Last day in Paris…

Left my cosy little apartment and checked in at Hotel Charma in the Bastille. Not sure exactly how “charming” it is..clean, basic, bed seems comfy and linen clean…I will survive..ImageImageImage

Went for a walk and found the saturday food markets where all the locals seem to be buying. Supermarkets like Coles or Woolworths are non existent. Everything available including sausage, sea urchins, escargot, cheese, fruit, veg, meat and poultry. ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Monmartre…

Ruth guided me on a tour of the area and we had lunch at the Cafe made famous by the film Amelie, passed the Moulin Rouge and wound our way up to the Sacre Coeur…ImageImageImageImageImageImage
