Caroline and Norbert’s last day….

Drove a short distance from Montepulciano to the town of Chianciano Terme. Explored the small but fascinating historical centre and checked out the “spas” which are private and offerring an array of treatments utilising the mineral waters of the region. We all had pizza for lunch…my first real pizza in Italy and it was truly delicious. We ended up having a little ‘aperitivo party’ in the apartment with Ruth, Anne and Jen (Australian girls) who were in my Il Sasso language school class, Carol my Canadian neighbour who is studying advanced Italian and Clare, an American student studying advanced Italian as well. Spritz all round, antipasta and then dinner at La Acquacheta where the Florentine steaks are legendary…giant T-bones, char-grilled rare and cut into large chunks. We shared 2 kilograms of this Italian bred beef!ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Further afield in Tuscany…

Drove with Caroline and Norbert to the edge of the Chianti region to the medieval castle/fortress of Monteriggioni home to a Garrison of soldiers as well as families. We drove to Siena and explored the central historical area including the Piazza del Campo an imposing sloping scallop shaped brick paved area surrounded by buildings. This is the site of the daring ‘il Palio’ horse race where they gallop around the edge of the campo. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was an architectural highlight and we finished the day with Aperol spritz overlooking the Campo while Norbert went to climb a tower! Dinner at home with Antipasta on the terrace followed by Caroline’s fresh tuscan asparagus pasta, after exploring the incredible cellars of a winery Cantina Del Redi built into the cliff of Montepulciano where I bough the luscious Vinsanto di Montepulciano, a truly lovely dessert wine.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Another day in Tuscany…

Drove across the fertile and productive valley ‘Valdichiana’ to Cortona built half way up a hillside for a wonderful morning of exploring. Continued back across the valley and wound our way up to a small village called Montefollonico. We had a sumptuous lunch at La Chiusa created by head chef and owner Dania…Zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta cheese, Tuscan crepes with porcini mushrooms, boneless rabbit with black truffle and had to have a dessert of Pistachio icecream with coffee mousse! Had a walk around this gorgeous tiny town and even happened upon a funeral and the church bell tolling. Drove home and sat around relaxing and very full !!ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageIMG_4765IMG_4771IMG_4772IMG_4774IMG_4775IMG_4777

Tripping around Tuscany…

Drove through the gorgeous rolling hills, vines, olives and fields of wild poppies dotted with Tuscan Villas with Caroline and Norbert in their little Fiat Punto to Pienza. It was really a pretty town and we were lucky to come across teams of men Pecorino Cheese Bowling in the Piazza Pio. We strolled the streets and came across the filming of “VIP Bus” which is going to be a German reality show with a funky transvestite. Lunch at Ristorante Il Chiostro in the garden with a panoramic views across the valley. Continued on to San Quirico d’ Orcia where a Medieval Archery festival was being held and the competitors took it very seriously and dressed authentically, which did look fantastic. We prepared dinner from local produce including wild boar salami, fresh buffalo mozzarella caprese salad, italian sausage and bresaola, pear baked with pecorino, artichokes and aubergine and semi dried tomatoes with Vino di Montepulciano of course. Perfecto!IMG_4669IMG_4673IMG_4674IMG_4678IMG_4686IMG_4687IMG_4688IMG_4691IMG_4694IMG_4697IMG_4702IMG_4707IMG_4711IMG_4714IMG_4719IMG_4729IMG_4731

Exploring Montepulciano with Caroline and Norbert….

Gorgeous Tuscan sunshiny day so walked up to Piazza Grande…un cafe Macchiato and Aperol…superb lunch at Ristorante Le Loggia Del Vignola of Ricoota and Spinach Gnocchi with Summer Truffle. We were shown the biggest truffle the owner had seen! Finished the meal with a very beautiful glass of Vino Santo, a dessert wine of the region. We shopped at the local supermercato “Conan” and made our way back up the hill with a coffee stop at Cafe Poliziano which has a stunning view over the surrounding countryside. Dinner was delicious at Osteria Gattavecchi where we toured the cellars dug into the mountainside and dined in the former Monastery’s refectory. The bruschetta selection was delicious followed by roast pork in chestnut sauce paired with a Gattavecchi Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano reserva 2004.ImageImageIMG_4620IMG_4619IMG_4624IMG_4625IMG_4630IMG_4633IMG_4637IMG_4640IMG_4642IMG_4649IMG_4651IMG_4653IMG_4655IMG_4656IMG_4660

Days in Forence….

I could not resist Lorenzo’s suggestion to try the best gelato at Gelateria Santa Trinita…creamy deliciousness…chocolate fondant, peaches with brandy and Ricotta and figs flavours!

Wandered the streets and explored the famous Ponte Vecchio which is a bridge for pedestrians only and dedicated to gold and jewellery shops. The River Arno was a milky coffee colour due to the rain. Walked up to Piazzale Michelangelo for a spectacular view of Florence and the river valley it sits in. An Aperol spritz was well deserved with such a view. I wound my way back down the hill via a beautiful rose garden in full bloom which framed Florence in the background very nicely.

Exploring Venice…

Venezia…

Travelled by train from Lake Como, via Milan and across the north of Italy to arrive in Venice. Its uniqueness was evident immediately upon leaving the station and seeing the bustle of the canals and everyone catching vaporetto (ferries). We walked through Cannaregio to the Rialto bridge and crossed the Grand Canal by gondola. We continued through a maze of alleyways and tiny canals to come out at Piazza San Marco where the Basilica of St Mark’s and the Doge’s Palace are located. We visited the Jewish Ghetto which was interesting and  had an incredible dinner of Cuttlefish Risotto in black ink.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Lago di Como…

Train to Como and nasty bus trip to our hotel at Cadenabbia on the shores of Lake Como. Unfortunately it was getting dark and raining so couldn’t see much. Freshwater fish for dinner of course. The next day was freezing and it was snowing on the mountains surrounding the lake which is absolutely spectacular and enormous. There are so many villages along the edges and higher up the slopes. Visited Villa Carlotta with its sublime gardens then ferried across to the village of Bellagio. Crossed the lake to Varenna and then Menaggio where we walked along the edge of the lake back to the hotel. Settled in at the bar to drink our wine purchased in Asti!ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

A day in Castagnole Monferrato….near Asti..Piemonte..Italy

Took a local bus from Asti to the village of Castagnole Monferrato and walked through the lush countryside of this wine producing area. We then visited a traditional family owned and operated vineyard and sat in their living room for wine tasting after inspecting their ancient cellar. Their speciality is a red wine variety called Ruche. We then went to a very local ‘agriturismo’ guest house where we had a magnificent lunch of regional produce accompanied by local red, Asti Moscato and of course complimentary Limoncello. the bus ride back took us through lovely villages and really scenic countryside.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
