The Big day out…

Weekend Visitors…

Roseanne, Ted and Mabel drove down to Polperro in their new Landrover (about 5 hours) and we went fishing, crabbing in the rockpools (as they do here with buckets and nets) and caving with a dinner at The Blue Peter Inn.

Bodmin Moor…

Well it was very bleak and I don’t know how Heathcliff and Cathy ever survived as well as all these stone age types building monuments and stone circles…

In memory of my Uncle John Eckersley…

Uncle John loved birds and nature!ImageImage

The Eden Project…

The Eden project near St Austell is an educational charity that explores how people can work together and with nature to change things for the better. A global garden was created in an old china clay pit. The 35 acre site now showcases people’s relationship with plants. The two Biomes under the big bubble domes are Rainforest and Mediterranean. The outdoor biome contains plants from the English environment. It was certainly fascinating and a bit weird to be perspiring in the humidity of a rainforest in the middle of Cornwall! The bubbles are almost surreal!ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Upstairs Downstairs….

IMG_2863ImageImageExplored some more of this part of Cornwall driving via Lostwithiel and its ancient bridge over the River Fowey and onto the National trust House and garden of Lanhydrock. I was amazed at the completeness of this Victorian country house where everything has been left by the Agar-Robartes family who lived there. The elegant family rooms were fascinating but equally as interesting were the working areas of the house and servants rooms.

Cornish Piskies…

Some people believe in these devilish, naughty, mischievous little piskies (pixies where I come from!)Image

The Blue Peter Inn…

Took myself off to the pub and had a glass of Pinot Gris soaking up the atmosphere. It is a dark, cosy pub with a great fire and locals and visitors were there. Had a great view from my window seat! Most pubs seem to be dog friendly and this one had loads..a red setter, two terriers, a jack russell, a King Charles Cavalier, a wiry looking thing and ‘alfie’ who posed for a photo.ImageImageImageImage

Cornwall….

Took a flight from Gatwick London to Newquay in Cornwall where I picked up my little hire car and excitedly but nervously drove off to Polperro. Thank goodness for the GPS as trying to drive an unfamiliar car and flicking on the windscreen wipers instead of indicators as well as working out where to go and looking at daffodils blooming, pheasants running out in front of me, sheep with black faces and gorgeous cottages in rolling fields can be quite dangerous! After one wrong turn and an adventurous short cut through the narrowest of country lanes and a water crossing, I made it to the fishing village of Polperro on the Cornish east coast. The car is in the community carpark as there are no cars in the village. It is amazing with its harbour and the stream that runs into it, tiny cottages and narrow paths, crying seabirds and craggy cliffs. My cottage is called Pebbles and has a kitchen dining area on the ground floor, lounge room on the next and bedroom and bathroom on the top. The view is spectacular overlooking the tiny harbour and amazing rock formation forming one side of the harbour. Paul the Luggage Taxi man was very nice and picked me and my bags up on a quad runner. I looked quite hilarious whizzing through Polperro in my purple beret on the back of the quad!
